‘Happy Days’ dad Tom Bosley dead at 83

LOS ANGELES — Tom Bosley, whose long acting career was highlighted by his hugely popular role as the understanding father on television’s nostalgic, top-rated 1970s comedy series “Happy Days,” died Tuesday. He was 83. Bosley died of heart failure at a hospital near his Palm Springs home. Bosley’s agent, Sheryl Abrams, said he was also battling lung cancer.

PARIS — Masked youths clashed with police and set fires in cities across France on Tuesday as protests against a proposed hike in the retirement age took an increasingly radical turn. Hundreds of flights were canceled, long lines formed at gas stations and train service in many regions was cut in half. President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to crack down on “troublemakers” and guarantee public order, raising the possibility of more confrontations with young rioters.

MGM Resorts raises $511 million through stock sale

MGM Resorts International announced Tuesday it raised $511 million by selling 40.9 million shares of common stock and plans to pay down its $13 billion debt. Also, billionaire Kirk Kerkorian sold almost 28 million shares of MGM Resorts. The company did not receive any proceeds from the sale of Kerkorian’s shares.
