UNLV stadium plan gets OK

The higher education system’s Board of Regents gave its initial OK on Friday to a plan that would build a 40,000-seat domed stadium on campus. The stadium would be accompanied by thousands of units of on campus housing, 600,000 square feet of retail space, a spacious outdoor gathering spot and parking for thousands of cars.

Germany’s cross-eyed opossum to pick Oscar winners

BERLIN — Heidi, Germany’s beloved cross-eyed opossum will attempt to pick this year’s Oscar winners. Leipzig Zoo Director Joerg Junghold told Germany’s RTL television on Friday that Heidi will be appearing on the “Jimmy Kimmel Show” alongside the Oscars on Feb. 27.

Report: Google, Facebook consider buying Twitter

NEW YORK — Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. have both held low-level talks with Twitter Inc. about purchasing the privately held social networking service, according to a report published Thursday. The talks have valued Twitter at $8 billion to $10 billion, The Wall Street Journal said, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The Journal said the company had 2010 revenue of $45 million but lost money as it hired and invested in data centers.

Party over for ‘Guitar Hero,’ but not music games

NEW YORK — “Guitar Hero” made ordinary people feel like rock stars, and its plastic guitars have redefined how people consume music and entertain themselves at house parties for the past half-decade. Yet its demise hardly marks the end of music games. The video game genre remains popular; it has just evolved. Many people these days play music-inspired games on the iPhone, such as “Tap Tap Revenge,” and dance games designed for Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing controller.

Regents to consider UNLV stadium deal

No fewer than a dozen stadium and arena proposals have emerged in Southern Nevada over the past 15 years, and most of those have fizzled. Today, the Board of Regents meets to consider whether to provide exclusive negotiations to Majestic Realty with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, regarding the construction of an on-campus stadium and other major improvements.
