More candidates file for Las Vegas, Henderson council races

About 40 people braved Tuesday’s chilly winds to accompany Steve Evans on a walk to Las Vegas City Hall, where he filed for the Ward 3 City Council race. He is the third candidate in that contest, joining former legislator Bob Coffin and attorney Tony Liker. The Las Vegas mayoral contest is also an open one, and two more candidates joined that already crowded field Tuesday. Plus, more candididates filed for Henderson City Council seats.

City may extend waiver for downtown liquor licenses

A year ago, Las Vegas officials waived a hefty fee for certain liquor licenses in order to encourage new nightspots in two downtown neighborhoods. It worked well enough that city officials want to keep the fee waiver in place for another year.

Bingo returns to Binion’s in new room on casino floor

Binion’s Gambling Hall on Tuesday brought back bingo, opening a new room in the middle of the casino floor. The casino’s operators dropped bingo a number of years ago but decided to bring it back since few other downtown properties downtown offered it.

Abuse of sick leave by firefighters detailed

More than 230 Clark County firefighters took excessive sick leave in 2009, with some missing one out of every six shifts because of sick calls, according to data presented to county commissioners Tuesday. Roughly a third of firefighters who respond to emergency calls took at least 10 sick days, the number of 24-hour shifts they work in a month.

TSA tests full-body scanning software at McCarran

Federal screeners on Tuesday began testing new software on one full-body imaging machine at McCarran International Airport to see whether it can ease consumers’ privacy concerns without hurting security efforts. Fourteen full-body imaging machines, which began being installed in September 2008, have been used on some passengers going through airport security. Traditional scanners screen other passengers while all bags are X-rayed for potential threats.

Developers unveil proposal for UNLV stadium complex

If the plan to build a stadium, retail complex and thousands of units of on-campus housing and hotel rooms at UNLV ever happens, it would transform the university. The plan, unveiled Tuesday by developers who back the idea, would see more than a third of the campus’ 332 acres turned into an integrated village.
