Despite the county paying him more than $100,000 a year, Mitchell wrote himself $70,000 in checks over the past two years. In 2016, Mitchell withdrew $500 at an ATM at Timbers, a video poker bar Less than 20 minutes later he took out another $500.
One Sunday he withdrew $100 at an ATM at Sunset Station Casino. There was also a $500 tab at this pub in a casino on the strip.
He also spent thousands on restaurant meals, bars and trips to towns where his children live. Mitchell declined an interview to explain why.

A cable company employee’s knock on the wrong east valley apartment door Saturday led to a homicide investigation. Malcolm Aubry, 22, answered the door and told the employee to call police. Aubry told police he punched his girlfriend because he was scared. Officers found Debra Pauline McCollum’s body on a bed in the apartment. Aubry now faces a murder charge and is being held in county jail without bail.
Lights FC midfielder Matt Thomas set records in his first start last Saturday. Thomas scored the club’s first-ever goal 70 seconds into its game at Fresno FC. It was the fastest goal by an expansion team in USL history. Now the Las Vegas native just wants to hold on to his starting spot. Once you get the start it’s just an opportunity, nothing more than that. You have to go out and prove yourself and prove that you deserve that spot.
Las Vegans may now keep up to 10 chickens in the yard of a single family home as long as their neighbors approve. Residents can keep hens for their eggs, but cannot breed the animals for sale or slaughter. Chickens are required to be kept in a fenced-in area with a run, and coops can’t be located any closer than 20 feet from their neighbors’ homes. Each adjacent property owner to the land where the chickens will be kept must provide their written consent. Some residents approached Councilman Bob Coffin about keeping chickens, and he sponsored the ordinance by request.

Steve Wynn plans to sell shares of Wynn Resorts amid talks from casino regulators over whether he should be forced to cut his stake in the company. ”Mr. Wynn disclosed that he intends to sell all or a portion of the common stock controlled by him,” the company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Wednesday morning. The casino mogul owns 12.1 million shares, or 11.8 percent of the company. The stake is valued at $2.2 billions of Tuesday night. ”If he elects to sell any such common stock, he will seek to conduct such sales in an orderly fashion and in cooperation with the company,” the company said.
Austin police confirm that a suspect in a spate of bombing attacks that left the Texas capital on edge for nearly three weeks died Wednesday morning. As law enforcement closed in on the 24-year-old man, he detonated a device inside his car. The blast injured a SWAT officer. Another officer fired his weapon. Austin police caught a break when the suspect shipped an explosive device via FedEx on Tuesday. A search warrant was obtained based on video from the FedEx distribution center and other store receipts.
Police were able to inspect the suspect’s Google search history, ultimately tracking his location. Authorities do not know if the suspect worked alone. They also don’t know his motives.
An attempted robbery Tuesday night turned deadly when two men exchanged gunfire at The Suites on Boulder Highway near Flamingo Road. Police said one man broke into an apartment and tried to rob a man. The two men pulled out guns and shot each other. One man was killed and the other was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Metro detectives are still investigating.
