With Cimarron holding a slight lead, Nathaniel Rodriguez scored a reversal with two seconds remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and win the 132-pound region title. In the process, he secured enough team points to help the Spartans bring home the ninth region title in program history Saturday at Centennial.
Centennial’s wrestling team is second in team points after the first day of the Sunset Region meet, and will send six wrestlers to the semifinals Saturday seeking the first region championship in program history.

Arbor View (50) holds a slim one-point lead over Cimarron-Memorial (49), while defending champion Shadow Ridge is in third place with 44 points, Bishop Gorman is in fourth place with 43 and Centennial rounds out the top five with 35 points.

As a sophomore last season, Shadow Ridge’s Brendt Burleson struggled to make weight and was left off the varsity roster for the postseason.
Cimarron-Memorial senior Jose Bonifaz lost his quarterfinal match in the Sunset Region tournament on Friday at Bonanza, and now has to work his way through the consolation bracket and capture third place in order to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Winnemucca.
