Moapa Valley doesn’t have much varsity experience back after a senior-laden team ran to an undefeated season and the Class 3A state championship last year.
Moapa Valley had several underclassmen who gained valuable experience in the spring, including the feeling of a rivalry win over Virgin Valley in the Hammer Game.
Bishop Gorman boys defender Caden Buckley and Faith Lutheran girls goalkeeper Jordan Brown were named Gatorade Nevada State Soccer players of the year.
Martin Blake ran for 113 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for a score to help the Pioneers to a 48-7 Southeast League win over Eldorado.
Garrett Castro threw a 6-yard touchdown pass, and Hector Barrios-Baez knocked home the game-winning extra point for Green Valley in a 24-23 win over Foothill.
Centennial ran away with its ninth straight Class 4A team championship. The Bulldogs scored 126 points. Runners-up Carson and Sierra Vista each had 54.
Martin ran the 100-meter dash in a personal-record time of 10.71 seconds on Saturday morning at Desert Oasis to claim the Mountain Region championship and an automatic bid in the state meet next week. The sturdy senior doubled as a running back for Legacy’s football team and said he started preparing for track season after football concluded.
Edmond ran the 100 meters in 11.84 seconds on Saturday at Desert Oasis to secure the Moutain Region championship — and an automatic bid to the Class 4A state meet next week. Teammate Aniya Smith finished second in 12.11, and Centennial’s Quincy Bonds ran 12.16 for third.
Winning pitcher Brooke Detommaso was 1-for-4 with four RBIs to help Bonanza’s softball team to a 9-6 win at Boulder City on Monday.
Western’s Jared Smith shot a 2-under-par 70 at Legacy Golf Club on Tuesday to win a Sunset League match.
Aaron Lopez doubled home Steven Tamborello with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on Friday as Legacy rallied for a 7-4 road baseball victory over Foothill.
