Nicholas held off hard-charging Massimiliano Swenson of Bishop Gorman to become Desert Oasis’ first region cross country champion. The Diamondbacks also won the boys region team title, another first in school history.

Conner Nicholas picked up his fourth victory in an invitational meet this season by capturing the large-school race of the Lake Mead Invitational on Saturday at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Coronado’s boys cross country team took four of the top five spots Tuesday to win a five-team meet at Sonata Park.
Green Valley senior Omar Rubio won the Sunrise regional cross country meet as the Gators coasted to the team championship.
Omar Rubio led the way, as he once again edged Arbor View’s Ian Jackson at the end to win the 3.1-mile race. Rubio sprinted away in the final 300 meters to win in 16 minutes, 24.4 seconds. Jackson finished second in 16:26.9.
Centennial junior Karina Haymore won just two cross country meets all season.
Fortunately for Haymore, the second win came in the biggest race of the year.
Dajour Braxton was awarded the No. 1 racing bib by meet director John Dixon before Thursday’s Division I Sunset Region meet at Sunset Park.
