Nevada is experiencing another surge of COVID-19 cases that could thwart the state’s economic recovery at a time when the safety net of unemployment benefits is due to end Sept. 4.

A state official said the department does not believe its unemployment system was hacked, but that claimants may have been victims of “several phishing and texting scams” that have resulted in personal information being stolen.
Despite thousands still waiting, an analysis shows Nevada performed better than expected, and improved speed in March and April.
Nevada and other states found it difficult to create a system to pay a small addition on claimants’ paychecks, and experts are now finding not much has changed since 2008.
