Bishop Gorman’s Tommi Stockham is the Review-Journal’s Nevada Preps Girls Athlete of the Year after leading the Gaels to their third state volleyball title in four years.
Here is the 2019 Nevada Preps All-Southern Nevada girls volleyball team.
Tommi Stockham had 24 kills, Taylor Jefferson added 18 kills and 13 digs, and the Gaels defeated Durango 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18 on Saturday in the Class 4A final.
Durango and Bishop Gorman will meet for the third time this season after posting three-set state semifinal wins at Faith Lutheran on Friday.
The Gaels weren’t as dominant as last season, but they’re back at the state tournament after winning the Desert Region. They’re joined at state by Durango and Palo Verde.
Tommi Stockham had 26 kills, and the Gaels claimed the Desert Region championship; Palo Verde started fast, put away Rancho in three sets for the Mountian Region crown.
The top-seeded Trail Blazers will meet No. 2 Bishop Gorman for the Desert Region championship. It’s No. 1 Palo Verde vs. No. 3 Rancho for the Mountain League crown.
Durango takes care of Foothill in three sets, while Palo Verde has its way with Arbor View. Bishop Gorman’s Stockham reaches 1,500 career kills in a win.
The Bulldogs moved into USA Today’s Super 25 Region VI rankings at No. 15 after becoming the first team to put a blemish on Faith Lutheran’s record in a 0-0 tie.
The Eagles will host a 20-team field in the Boulder City Invitational, a week after ranking as the highest valley finisher in the Durango Fall Classic.
The Durango Fall Classic, a 64-team event with a mix of schools from the valley and others from all over the country, will be played at four schools Friday and Saturday.
The Crusaders have dominated each of their seven opponents, outscoring them 40-1 in a perfect start that has garnered them national attention.

The host Cougars, trailing 12-8 in the decisive fifth set, rattled off seven consecutive points and eked out a 20-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 15-12 victory over the Trailblazers. Coronado advanced to the Desert Region championship against Bishop Gorman.
