Bishop Gorman rolled to a home win over Coronado to finish the regular season 10-0 and earn the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs.
Both are Class 5A state volleyball semifinalists, but Gorman has been the state’s top program in the past five seasons, while Centennial has been rebuilding this season.
Jovantae Barnes ran for 139 yards and four touchdowns to help Desert Pines beat Palo Verde 38-13 in the first-ever Class 5A game for both teams.

The top-seeded Crusaders put in three goals in the first four minutes of their Moutain Region quarterfinal. Coronado, the No. 1 seed in the Desert Region, also moved on.
The Chargers have earned all of their three league wins in dramatic fashion by a total of 15 points, but their 49-48 win over Desert Oasis clinched a playoff berth.

Charron Thomas scored three rushing touchdowns and added another on a punt return as Palo Verde rallied for a 43-27 road victory over Durango.
Led by senior Tyler Edlefsen, Palo Verde scored 91 points to hold off second-place Coronado, which scored 84, and won the Class 4A state title.
Sparked by individual wins from Rome Odunze and Kyu Kelly, the Gaels wrapped up their second consecutive Class 4A title by scoring 99 points.
Bonds, who also ran on the winning 400 relay team and finished third in the 100, helped Centennial build a big lead heading into Saturday’s events.
