UNLV’s basketball team on Tuesday night knocked off another conference team from distance, and in the process swept the regular-season series from New Mexico for the first time in eight years with a 74-58 victory.

UNLV’s cheerleaders and Rebel Girls & Company dance team were absent from the Thomas Mack Center Saturday where the Rebels routed San Jose State. But they had a good excuse. They were at Disneyworld winning national championships.
Longtime Las Vegan Rick Down, who died at home Saturday at age 68, spent 17 seasons as a major league hitting coach.
The Skatin’ Rebels are 11-4 this season and continue to dream about one day advancing from club to NCAA Division I level, which could take as much as $20 million.
The calendar flips this time each year and college basketball welcomes conference play, when even teams that endured some forgettable results the previous month can hold onto the idea that failure is simply the opportunity to begin anew.
