UNLV picked the most inopportune time to play its worst round of golf this season. The Rebels, who needed to play decently Sunday at the NCAA men’s golf championship to land a spot in the top 15, went the opposite way.

Senior Carl Jonson rebounded from a first-round 83 with a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA men’s golf championship in Bradenton, Fla. Jonson, who has a bulging disk in his neck, led a comeback for the Rebels, who moved from 25th to 18th place.
UNLV shot 14-over-par 302 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA men’s golf championship at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Rebels are 25th in the 30-team field, 16 strokes behind leader Illinois.
Katie Powell, a 6 feet 4 inch center from Arkansas, will transfer to UNLV. She will sent out next basketball season because of NCAA transfer rules, and then will have three years of eligibility.

UNLV took a step back this season after making an NCAA baseball regional in 2014. But coach Tim Chambers said the program is on the right track, and he has high expectations for next season.
UNLV’s football program posted a four-year Academic Progress Rate average of 937. The minimum to be eligible for postseason play is 930. All 17 UNLV sports achieved above the four-year required APR.

The grade-point average of UNLV’s football team rose from a 2.35 in the fall semester to a 2.7 for the term that recently ended, coach Tony Sanchez said. He also said 11 players made the Dean’s List.
UNLV senior Dana Finkelstein became just the second women’s golfer in program history to earn first-team All-America honors when the team was named on Tuesday by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

UNLV is 22nd out of 24 teams entering the third round of the NCAA women’s golf championship in Bradenton, Fla. The top 15 teams after Sunday’s round advance to the final round of stroke play Monday. The top eight then advance to match play starting Tuesday.
