Spanish Springs, which edged the Gators by two points last season, has the first-day lead at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament with 110½ points.
Shadow Ridge’s wrestling team recorded four pins in less than a minute Wednesday en route to a 62-12 road win over Arbor View.
Nick Reyes, Cameron Gardner and D’Andre Aitala had first-period pins Tuesday to lead Silverado’s wrestling team to a 48-34 road win over Durango.
Spring Valley 132-pounder Andres Garcia beat the Sunrise Region champion, the Sunset runner-up and last week’s Sunset Region champion to claim his first Class 4A state championship Friday at The Orleans Arena.
Green Valley sophomore Steele Dias won the 106-pound state championship to help the Gators to their sixth consecutive state title Saturday at Spanish Springs High School.
Having won five consecutive state championships, Green Valley coach Jon Ferry might have expected to feel comfortable with a lead after the first day of the Class 4A state tournament. But Ferry wasn’t feeling so secure as his team prepared to leave the gym after Friday’s semifinal round at Spanish Springs.
Adrian Ojeda and fellow senior Robert Razo each won individual state titles at Star of the Desert Arena, helping Green Valley capture its fifth consecutive team championship at the Division I state wrestling tournament.
