Before signing the Freedom of Information Act into law in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson made it clear to those closest to him that he strongly disliked the legislation. According to Bill Moyers, Mr. Johnson’s press secretary at the time, the president “hated the thought of journalists rummaging in government closets.” By the time Mr. Johnson actually signed the legislation, however, even the president had to publicly concede FOIA’s importance “in an open society in which the people’s right to know is cherished and guarded.”

LAKE MEAD — Bass sightings are increasing, but the fish are not being fooled, and most are not yet taking bait. The largemouth and smallmouth are moving into the shallows. Within the next week or two, the fish should begin making nests and stand ready to protect them. Crankbaits, drop shot rigs and crawdad patterns fished on jigs all might be worth a try. Striper reports have been light, but with the new moon on Friday, fishing should improve for those fishing at night.

Inmate serving time for 1994 Clark County murder dies

An inmate convicted of murder died Tuesday in Carson City, the Nevada Department of Corrections released Wednesday. Bobbie Mills, 49, was housed at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. He died at the center’s regional medical facility, the corrections department wrote in a release.
