House fire in northwest valley displaces 1; cause unknown

While a northwest valley man was running errands Thursday afternoon, his home caught fire, gutting one bedroom and leaving "a coating of black soot over everything," Las Vegas Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters responded to the 4420 Loma Court house, near Decatur Boulevard and Craig Road, around 4:12 p.m. after several neighbors and passers-by reported the blaze.

The cause was undetermined Thursday night, but fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said the blaze started in the bedroom.

The homeowner "was pulling up just as firefighters were pulling up," Szymanski said, so he was not injured.

When he arrived, he was able to open the garage for fire crews to better access the fire.

"The timing was pretty decent," Szymanski said.

The fire was out in 10 minutes with help from North Las Vegas Fire.

Damages were estimated at about $75,000 and left the one-story, stucco home's owner displaced. Szymanski said the Red Cross was assisting him.

The fire's cause is under investigation.
