What people do during the national anthem is a personal choice
The current controversy about some NFL players “taking a knee” or remaining in the locker room during the national anthem has sparked considerable angst from both supporters and detractors. I submit that showing respect for the flag and national anthem is a privilege accorded all citizens.
As a retired member of the armed forces, I am proud to show my respect for both the flag and anthem at every opportunity. However, showing such respect is a personal matter and privilege, not a requirement for every citizen. I strongly support these players’ right to react in whatever manner they feel appropriate during pregame ceremonies. I will never agree with what they do, but my feelings are a personal matter and should not impact their rights.
Everyone must decide for himself whether a public display of respect for the national anthem or taking that opportunity to make a statement about a social injustice is more important to them.
