NFL Player injured, 1 dead in Florida drive-by shooting

Running back Chris Johnson was shot in the shoulder in a drive-by shooting Sunday morning in Orlando, Fla., that left one man dead and another injured, according to reports.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the shooting took place at an intersection at about 4:09 a.m. Deputies responded to a shooting call and arrived to find a Jeep with the driver dead inside and two other men with gunshot wounds on the sidewalk, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The driver of the vehicle, Dreekius Oricko Johnson, 28, was killed by gunfire, according to the sheriff’s office. Chris Johnson, 29, and another man, Reggie Johnson, also 29, were passengers in the Jeep.

The two men told deputies that an unknown vehicle pulled up beside them at the red light and opened fire into the Jeep. They were taken to a hospital in stable condition. Reggie Johnson suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder, hand and leg.

Chris Johnson, an Orlando native, played this past season with the New York Jets. The Jets last month declined to exercise an option to retain Johnson, who signed a two-year, $8 million contract after being released by the Tennessee Titans last year.

Johnson, a former 2,000-yard back with the Titans, put together a disappointing season in 2014, rushing 155 times for 663 yards and a touchdown. With 8,628 yards, he is the fifth-leading active rusher in the NFL. He will become a free agent Tuesday.

Johnson was arrested in January in Orlando when two semiautomatic handguns were found inside his car. He was charged with a second-degree misdemeanor, open carrying of firearms, and was later released on $250 bond.
