67-year-old man missing at Lake Mead

Officials are searching for a 67-year-old man at Lake Mead National Recreation Area after his unoccupied boat was found drifting Monday afternoon, the National Park Service announced Tuesday.

Lake Mead officials received several calls between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Monday reporting an unoccupied vessel floating in the Virgin Basin of Lake Mead.

Rangers found the boat with no one on board, and the National Park Service began an immediate search on the water.

One helicopter from the Arizona Department of Public Safety and two helicopters from a U.S. Air Force rescue squadron assisted Monday with the search, which resumed Tuesday with the support of the National Guard, according to the Park Service.

The missing man, whose name was not released, launched his boat about 4 a.m. Monday at Callville Bay, on the Nevada side of the lake. The boat was found 13 hours later about 16 miles from its launch point.

Crews are searching an area about 20 to 25 square miles.
