Strong winds, light showers blow through Las Vegas Valley

Updated January 8, 2026 - 10:12 pm

The year began last week with some rain. This week, it was the strong winds.

The Las Vegas Valley was under a wind advisory for much of the day Thursday. Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, blew through the valley.

“The cold front and associated precipitation have cleared the Las Vegas Valley,” the National Weather Service said on X just after 9 a.m. “Widespread wind gusts of 35-55 mph were observed, along with a few reports of graupel.”

NV Energy reported about 4,100 customers were affected by power outages, with the concentrations near West Flamingo Road and South Rainbow Boulevard (1,035 in an outage recorded just before 7:40 a.m.; South Eastern Avenue and East Bonanza Road (1,958 just after 7:35 a.m.); and near East Cheyenne Avenue and North Lamb Boulevard (1,048, around 7:45 a.m.).

Nevada Highway Patrol advised shortly before 10:30 a.m. that State Route 157 (Kyle Canyon Road) was “completely shut down due to inclement weather conditions.”

Amid windy conditions, some light showers fell across the valley by 10 a.m., including Centennial Hills, Summerlin and North Las Vegas.

In the valley, high temperatures will struggle to get out of the low 50s for the next few days. Lows will be in the upper 30s through the weekend.

After last week’s rain, Harry Reid International Airport has registered 0.11 inches of rain so far in 2026. It received no rain in January 2025.
