Teen’s Facebook post costs dad $80,000

MIAMI — A Florida teenager’s Facebook post has cost her father an $80,000 legal settlement.

The Palm Beach Post reported Sunday that Patrick Snay had sued the Miami-area Gulliver Preparatory School for age discrimination after he lost his job as headmaster in 2011.

The school agreed to settle the case for $80,000 and the settlement agreement included a stipulation that Snay and his wife not disclose details of the settlement with anyone.

“Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver,” his daughter, Dana Snay, posted days later to her 1,200 Facebook friends. “Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT.”

The post spread throughout the teen’s friends, many still students at the school, and made its way back to the school’s attorneys, who said the Snays had violated a confidentiality agreement. Snay won an appeal in 2013 to enforce the settlement, but on Wednesday a judge overturned the decision, according to the Miami Herald.

“Snay violated the agreement by doing exactly what he had promised not to do,” Judge Linda Ann Wells wrote. “His daughter then did precisely what the confidentiality agreement was designed to prevent.”
