Public meeting to discuss downtown pedestrian and bicycle circulation

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the city of Henderson plan a second public meeting as part of the pedestrian circulation study to identify ways to enhance the overall pedestrian experience in Downtown Henderson from 4 to 7 p.m. July 17 in the Henderson Convention Center, 200 Water St.

The study is seeking input from the public to identify routes, design features and amenities that could help improve access, connectivity and safety for pedestrian and bicycle circulation to and within the downtown Henderson area.

Representatives from the city of Henderson and the RTC are scheduled to be available to answer questions about the Downtown Parks Master Plan, Bicycle Friendly Community and other initiatives.

HENDERSON SCHEDULES FAMILY FUN NIGHT at black mountain aquatic center

The city of Henderson has scheduled a Family Fun Night at 7 p.m. July 20 at the Black Mountain Aquatic Center, 599 Greenway Road.

The evening is expected to feature a bounce house, poolside activities and snacks.

CREDIT UNION JOINS HENDERSON CHAMBER

The Clark County Credit Union announced in June it was joining the Henderson Chamber of Commerce.

With the partnership, the union is expected to offer services to members of the chamber.

DESERT NEWCOMERS CLUB to host NETWORKING EVENT

The Desert Newcomers Club has scheduled its monthly luncheon at 11 a.m. July 17 at Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, 2245 Village Walk Drive, in The District at Green Valley Ranch.

The club is a social organization for women to network and make friends.

The mixer is expected to include a game of bingo.

TALK SHOP WITH THE COPS EVENT
SET FOR JULY 23 AT WHITNEY RANCH

The Henderson Police Department plans a Talk Shop with the Cops event from 6 to 7 p.m. July 23 at the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, and from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Heritage Senior Center, 300 S. Racetrack Road.

The events are slated to focus on issues such as traffic, crime trends and neighborhood safety. A question-and-answer period is planned after the presentations.

The gatherings give residents a chance to voice any concerns and are geared to foster cooperation between police and the public.

HENDERSON POLICE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CITIZENS’ ACADEMY

The Henderson Police Department is accepting applications through July 25 for its upcoming Citizens’ Academy, planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from Aug. 13 to Nov. 5.

The goal of the academy is to build a bridge between residents and police and provide a condensed version of a police academy.

Graduates of the program can gain insight into the life and training of a law enforcement officer. Topics to be covered include radio and communication, community policing, use of force, gang enforcement, crime scene investigation, detention center procedures, criminal justice, domestic violence and criminalistics.

Applicants must live or work in the city of Henderson, be at least age 18 and have no felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor convictions.

Applications can be picked up at the main station, 223 Lead St.; the Green Valley Substation, 300 S. Green Valley Parkway; the North Community Police Station, 225 E. The Face the World Foundation is registering volunteer host families for the fall semester of high school.

Host families provide a loving home, meals and a bed while learning firsthand about another culture and establishing friendships that will last a lifetime.
