HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, take a moderate, 3-mile hike at Red Spring at night; for ages 12 and older. On Thursday and Friday, free short tours will be offered at Red Spring from 9 a.m. to noon.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, the summer series for kids ages 2 to 7 focuses on butterflies and their life stages. On Wednesday, a tabletop presentation explores the mammals of Red Rock, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Saturday, meet "Mascot Max," a representation of Mojave Max, and learn interesting facts about the desert tortoise. Also on Saturday, kids ages 2 to 7 can learn about animal adaptations. Also on Saturday, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society will have member telescopes to view objects in the night sky, or bring your own telescope or binoculars. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center. On Aug. 7, people 10 and older can take a geology field trip around the Scenic Drive. Also on Aug. 7, a tabletop presentation will teach about the Paiute people who were native to Red Rock and their culture, from 1 to 3 p.m.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
