Literary Las Vegas: Denise Scherschel

Las Vegas children’s book author Denise Scherschel dedicated her book “Zippy McZoomerman Gears Up” to family friend Francis McCabe III, a “fantabulous kid,” who inspired her story and taught her a valuable life lesson. “I will never forget when he looked me in the eye, patted my hand and sweetly told me the following words when I almost didn’t do something because I didn’t know how, ‘It’s okay — just try.’ ” In the book, Zippy doesn’t let anything slow him down despite being born with a spinal injury. His wheelchair, walker and braces aren’t just necessities; they’re superhero-like gear that help him “zip and zoom around with his friends.” Scherschel said she hopes the book’s simple message helps increase awareness about children living with disabilities.
