Ferraros put on show in Wranglers’ home opener
October 22, 2007 - 9:00 pm
The Wranglers' uniforms have changed and so have several of their players, but their results look the same early in their fifth ECHL season.
Two days after starting the season with a 2-1 overtime victory at Fresno, Las Vegas cruised to a 4-1 win over the Stockton Thunder in its home opener Sunday before a crowd of 4,366 at the Orleans Arena.
Much is expected of the Wranglers' newcomers this season, particularly the Ferraro twins, Peter and Chris. They wasted little time delivering, combining for two goals and three assists Sunday.
Peter Ferraro scored to snap a 1-1 tie with 3:30 to play in the first period when he converted a rebound of a shot by Ryan Donally. Chris Ferraro assisted on the play and made it 3-1 in the second period when he knocked his own rebound past Stockton goalie Glenn Fisher. Peter Ferraro set up the goal with a drop pass.
"They're our guys we rely on and they came through in a timely manner," Las Vegas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "That's why we brought them in and so far it's worked out."
The Thunder (0-2) opened the scoring 1:50 into the game when Brad Farynuk's power-play slap shot sailed through traffic past Las Vegas goalie John Curry.
But the Wranglers answered 16 seconds later when Shawn Limpright scored after a scramble behind the net.
Las Vegas outshot Stockton 18-9 in the first period, 11-5 in the second and 33-24 overall.
Adam Cracknell capped the scoring with 1:40 to play. Matt Beaudoin and Brandon Kaleniecki assisted for the Wranglers, who already have 11 players with points.
"It was a great team effort. We applied ourselves for the full 60 minutes and our goaltending was outstanding once again," said Peter Ferraro, who had a goal and two assists. "If the effort is there and we stick with our system, the results are going to be there the majority of the time."
Curry, who faced 24 shots, has barely had time to get settled since arriving Thursday, but the former Boston University goalie said the sudden move helped him relax.
"It kind of came out of nowhere and it almost took some pressure off. I didn't have time to think about it," said Curry, who was assigned to Las Vegas by the Pittsburgh Penguins. "It's a different game. There are definitely some more skilled guys here and the play is a little quicker, but at the same time it's more controlled.
"As a goalie at this level you need to anticipate and it's almost easier to do it when the players are better. They know what they're doing with the puck and there are less bouncy pucks."
Curry, who has recovered from offseason hip surgery, and the Wranglers will gun for a 3-0 start at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at home against Stockton.
• NOTES -- The Wranglers are 4-1 in home openers. ... Including their 13-game winning streak to end last season, the Wranglers have won 15 straight regular-season games. Their last loss was March 10.
