Lorenzi Park to host afternoon jazz concert

Bring blankets or lawn chairs to the outdoor theater in Lorenzi Park and spend the afternoon from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday listening to jazz.

Featured performers are Santa Fe and the Fat City Horns, a Las Vegas-based band that is known for its blend of rhythm and blues, funk, soul, salsa and jazz that bends the boundaries of each genre to form a contemporary sound.

Gates open at 11 a.m. and admission is free.

Participants are asked to enter on the west side of the park, off Twin Lakes Drive, south of West Washington Avenue.

Picnics are welcome, but glass containers and pets are not permitted. Free hot dogs, chips and beverages will be available while supplies last. Call 229-1087 for more information.

Band founder and leader Jerome Lopez says the band is the culmination of the dreams of all of the individual musicians, who want "to play music that moved, challenged and inspired us without the usual external restriction, influences or boundaries."

All of the band's members are experienced musicians with extensive resumes.

In addition to guitarist Lopez, the band includes vocalist/percussionist Lenny Lopez, keyboardist/vocalist Jamie Hosmer, drummer/percussionist/vocalist Gabriel Santana Falcon, trombonists Danny Falcon and Gil Kaupp, keyboardist Dave Richardson, guitarist Rochan Westmoreland, and drummer/percussionist Jose "Pepe" Jimenez.

The program is presented by the Arts & Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services with support from the Las Vegas Jazz Society.
