Breast cancer patients seek out more information

It is estimated that over 60,000 women annually are diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ breast cancer. Patients can usually choose between breast-conserving surgery and simple mastectomy. Nipple-sparing mastectomy an option for some patients

Traditionally during a mastectomy, the nipple-areola complex is not preserved after the breast tissue is removed. With the nipple-sparing mastectomy, the tissue beneath the nipple is immediately tested. If it is found to be clear of cancerous cells, it is spared and reattached after reconstruction surgery.
