It has been a year of learning. With economic challenges at every turn throughout 2009, many have been forced to do more with less. People have downsized, minimized, economized and localized. In a sense it could be considered a sort of natural correction. As we move forward into the new year we should not forget these important lessons.

Christmas is celebrated on Dec. 25 each year, but the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah falls on dates determined by the lunar, not the solar, calendar — so the dates are different every year.

At the farmers market today some of us from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program will be presenting a short workshop on starting vegetables from seeds that germinate in cold weather and container growing. Some examples of container plants, such as leaf lettuce and endive, will be demonstrated.

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care …” Christmas is eight days away, and Hanukkah began at sundown on Dec 11. The joy we feel going into the holiday season can quickly turn to stress as we try to fit celebrations, gift buying and decorating into our already busy schedules.
