Barrick Gold delivers 15,000 pounds of beef to food bank

Nevada’s largest gold miner has made a major contribution to a big, local food pantry.

Barrick Gold Corp. has delivered nearly 15,000 pounds of ground beef and beef roasts to Three Square Food Bank to help the organization and its partners meet the needs of food-insecure locals over the holidays.

The donation, worth more than $68,000, comes from Barrick’s ranches in northeastern Nevada, where it also has several gold mines.

The company sent employees to volunteer on-site Friday at Three Square’s Pecos Road facility to label and store beef packages.

Protein-rich foods are among the most expensive and difficult items for food banks to acquire, the organizations said in a statement.

Barrick’s gift was part of a larger company initiative to help feed Nevada’s needy. Other beef-donation recipients included the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and nonprofit agencies in Elko, Ely, Winnemucca and other rural Nevada towns.
