Campaign to benefit soldiers coming through USO Lounge at McCarran

Soon, military servicemen and servicewomen coming through the USO Lounge at McCarran International Airport may receive a little something extra.

Smith’s Food & Drug and the USO are accepting cash donations from 1-5 p.m., Saturday through Monday at local Smith’s stores. Small containers of snacks and personal care items also will be accepted, then distributed to soldiers coming through the USO Lounge at McCarran.

Customers also are invited to write messages of support to military personnel on co-branded postcards. Through Aug. 17, customers also can drop change into coin boxes at each check stand if they want to donate to the USO.

In 2012, Smith’s parent company, Kroger Co., announced a major commitment to hiring veterans, including joining more than 90 other companies in the “100,000 Jobs Mission.” The program has a collective goal of hiring more than 100,000 transitioning servicemembers and military veterans by 2020. Since 2009, more than 17,000 veterans have joined the Kroger Co.

On Saturday the stores at 10100 W. Tropicana Ave., 10600 Southern Highlands Parkway and 9350 W. Flamingo Road will be collecting. On Sunday, donations are being accepted at 1000 N. Green Valley Parkway, 2385 E. Windmill Parkway, 9750 S. Maryland Parkway, 10616 S. Eastern Ave., and 830 S. Boulder Highway. Monday’s donation locations are: 450 N. Nellis Blvd., 5564 Camino Al Norte, 6855 N. Aliante Parkway and 2225 E. Centennial Parkway.
