Gaming Control Board pushes for Internet poker taxation

CARSON CITY - The Nevada State Gaming Control Board is pushing for legislation in the Nevada Senate to tax the net profits of Internet poker tournaments.

Gaming Control Board Chairman A.G. Burnett presented the bill, Senate Bill 9, to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary on Tuesday.

On-site tournaments are not taxed because they are promotional events for gambling institutions and require significant investment by the host. Burnett said because interactive tournaments do not have the same expenses, such as utilities, floor space rental fees, food and beverages, they should not be exempt from tax.

He added that the proposed tax in SB9 would not extend to prizes won by players gambling online.
