Las Vegas gains as move destination
Anybody noticed an influx of newbies out and about in our fair city?
Well, you might not be wrong.
Penske Truck Rental released its 2013 list of top moving destinations within the United States, and for the first time, Las Vegas made the grade, albeit at No. 10.
Keep in mind the list is only 4 years old.
Atlanta has taken the list’s top spot each year. Second is the Tampa-Sarasota area of Florida, also new to the group. Previously in that spot was Dallas-Fort Worth, which came in at No. 3 this year.
Orlando, Fla., one of Las Vegas’ big tourism competitors, was unchanged at No. 4, while Phoenix was bumped to No. 5 from its No. 3 spot. Houston stayed at No. 6, with Seattle moving up to No. 7 from No. 8, which Chicago filled this year. It previously was ranked No. 5. Denver slid a bit to No. 9 from 7, and of course, Las Vegas took No. 10.
“We have seen a continued migration of Penske Truck Rental customers from the Northeast and Midwest parts of the U.S. into these areas,” said Don Mikes, Penske senior vice president of rental.
The list is compiled through online consumer truck rental reservations and Penske Truck Rental call centers. Parameters used to compile this information were based on requests for one-way moves.
Clark County doesn’t track in-migration data, but it estimated its population grew 2.67 percent for the county and 2.95 percent in the unincorporated areas during 2013.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 35.9 million U.S. residents, or 11.7 percent of Americans, moved from 2012 to 2013. The nation’s mover rate is down slightly from 12 percent in 2012.
Of those who migrated, 24.7 percent moved 500 or more miles. The Northeast had the lowest rate among regions at 7.8 percent, followed by the Midwest at 11 percent. The South’s mover rate was 12.8 percent and West was highest at 13.4 percent.
