Las Vegas ranks as fifth-most-booked U.S. destination for 2016, poll shows

Las Vegas ranks as the fifth-most-booked U.S. travel destination for 2016, a new poll shows.

Travel Leaders Group of Plymouth, Minn., which operates company-owned, franchised and affiliated travel agencies in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia, released its 2016 Travel Trends Survey on Wednesday. The poll was based on interviews with more than 1,316 U.S.-based travel agency owners, managers and others.

The poll shows Orlando, Fla., as the 2016 booking leader, listed first by 35.9 percent of pollees. Maui, Hawaii, (35.8 percent) was second, followed by Alaska cruises (35.3 percent) and New York trips (30.3 percent).

The group said 28.8 percent of poll participants listed Las Vegas as their most-booked destination, helping the city maintain its fifth-place overall ranking from 2015.

Cruises ranked as the first- (Caribbean) and third-most-booked (European river trips) international travel for 2016, the group said. Travel to Cancun, Mexico, was second.

Paris fell out of the international most-booked top 10 for the first time since 2011, the group said. The city ranked seventh in 2015 and eighth in 2014. Ten percent of polled travel agents said a small percentage of their clients were delaying trips to Paris because of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks; 6 percent said clients had canceled Paris trips after the attacks.

The survey shows 94.9 percent of travel agents surveyed expect 2016 client travel spending to equal or exceed that of 2015. Also, 85.2 percent of agents say 2016 bookings are on par or increased from a year ago.

Travel Leaders Group conducted its survey from Nov. 17 to Dec. 8.
