Striking Las Vegas cab drivers take protest to Carson City
CARSON CITY — Las Vegas cabdrivers who have been on strike for weeks staged a loud protest Tuesday afternoon outside the Nevada legislative building, chanting about their ongoing contract disputes and the death of a bill that would have ramped up penalties for long hauling.
About 50 protesters gathered to chant “we want justice” and “shame on Frias,” blowing on the plastic vuvuzela horns more commonly found at soccer matches and carrying posters depicting rats, a symbol for bosses on the union workers’ bad sides.
Drivers from Clark County’s two largest cab companies, Yellow Checker Star Transportation and Frias Transportation Management, have been embroiled in labor disputes with their respective employers and have been on strike since March.
Dennis Arrington, president of the union that represents Yellow Checker Star drivers, said the group is also protesting the failure of a bill that would impose stricter penalties for long hauling.
