World’s largest LED screen, on Las Vegas Strip, goes green

Here’s another superlative for the Las Vegas landscape.

Since 2011, the Harmon Retail Corner has been home to the world’s largest ultra-high-definition light-emitting diode, or LED, screen, but now the sign is green, too.

The 65-foot-tall by 320-foot-long billboard, located at Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, displays high-definition advertisements and effects.

Brian Henry, who worked on the sign at Young Electric Sign Co., said the sign has the an ultra-high pixel count of 7K or 7,360 by 1,440 pixels. For comparison, the highest resolution TVs are 4K, or 3,840 by 2,160 pixels.

After an eco-friendly upgrade last year, the Governor’s Office of Energy approved a partial property tax incentive of 25 percent for six years.

The building achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council late last year. 

The upgrade is expected to achieve a 31 percent reduction in water use and a 12 percent decrease in electricity use because of reduced energy needed for cooling.

The certification measures sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.

Eric Roberts, vice president of SH Architecture, the firm that designed the building, said the screen is built to be updated over time.

Some of the building’s special features are energy efficiency; dynamic heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and the use of local and renewable materials.

Some of the tile in the building was recycled, and all water fixtures are ultra-low consumption. In addition, the building management uses green fixtures and employs green pest control and recycling policies.

“This approval fits in perfectly with GOE’s mission of attracting energy-related business ventures that include energy retrofitting and site development,” said Paul Thomsen, director of the Governor’s Office of Energy. “The Las Vegas Strip is an epicenter for high-technology displays, and Harmon Corner’s LED screen is among the best.”

The Harmon Retail Corner project also includes a pedestrian bridge over Harmon Avenue, covered outdoor terraces overlooking the Strip and a ground-level plaza.
