Arson arrest made in south valley fire

A man was arrested Monday in connection with an arson that occurred at Sport-Social, a south valley center for autistic children.

Samuel Powers, 24, faces first-degree arson and burglary charges, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the early Monday morning blaze at 7055 Windy St., near Warm Springs Road and Las Vegas Boulevard, and found the building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the blaze. The fire started at multiple locations, and there was evidence Molotov cocktails were used, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

Powers, who told Las Vegas police he works for the Lovaas Center for Behavioral Intervention, a competing business, was seen leaving the building with a red five-gallon plastic fuel container, according to the arrest report.

About $50,000 worth of damage was done to the building. No injuries reported.
