Counterterrorism exercise planned at two valley malls tonight

A counterterrorism exercise will be conducted at two south valley malls Wednesday night, Las Vegas police said.

Personnel with the Metropolitan Police Department, the Nevada Highway Patrol and fire departments from Southern Nevada will conduct the training exercise that simulates an attack on busy malls with armed assailants starting at 11 p.m. at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet Mall, 7400 Las Vegas Boulevard S., and nearby Town Square, 6605 Las Vegas Boulevard S.

The exercise will end about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.

The mission of the exercise is to “test the coordinated response of multiple law enforcement agencies” under the MACTAC principles, police said.

MACTAC stands for MultiAssaultCounterTerrorismAction, and is a concept developed in response to the 2009 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India.

Planning for the exercise began in February, police said.
