Court of Appeals judges take oath of office
The three judges of Nevada’s new Court of Appeals took the oath of office at a Las Vegas ceremony Thursday, three months after their investiture in Carson City.
“We are working very hard,” said Michael Gibbons, chief judge of the new court. “We want this court to be successful.”
Voters approved the creation of the Court of Appeals in November by allowing an amendment to Article 6 of Nevada’s Constitution.
Gov. Brian Sandoval appointed the court’s three judges: Gibbons, Jerome Tao and Abbi Silver. They were officially sworn in on Jan. 5, and a formal investiture was held a week later in Carson City.
Since its inception, the court has been assigned 300 cases. It has issued 165 unpublished orders and recently issued its first published opinion.
Nevada Supreme Court Justice Mark Gibbons spoke Thursday on behalf of his younger brother, Michael, a former Douglas County district judge.
“As he reminds me, he’s the senior judge in the family,” Mark Gibbons said. “He’s been a judge two years longer than me. And so he has seniority, even though he’s six years younger than me.”
Numerous judges, including the Supreme Court’s seven justices, attended the ceremony at the Clark County Government Center.
