DA’s office recuses itself from murder case

The Clark County district attorney's office has recused itself from prosecuting a 63-year-old man charged with murder because a relative works for the office.

The state attorney general's office received the case against Roger T. Foley II on Tuesday. The 63-year-old was arrested Saturday on charges of murder with a deadly weapon in the death of Ronald Wayne Mattox and the attempted murder of Betty Mattox.

Foley is related to the prominent legal family of the same name, including deceased federal judges Roger T. Foley and his son, Roger D. Foley. The Foley Federal Building on Las Vegas Boulevard is named in honor of the family.

Foley also is related to Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Foley.

Foley is accused of shooting Ronald Mattox, 54, and his mother after the two men began quarreling in the hallway of a senior's apartment complex at 4170 Bonanza Road near Lamb Boulevard.

Foley, who is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center, is set to appear in Las Vegas justice court Wednesday.
