Five hospitalized in related shootings at Rio, UMC

Three men were shot in a Rio parking garage early Sunday and two more were shot outside University Medical Center several hours later in related incidents that have gang ties, Las Vegas police said.

A police officer who was not identified fired at one man at the Rio, but it wasn't immediately clear if the gunshots struck him.

None of the injuries resulted in death as of Sunday night, police said.

The incident began at the resort just west of the Strip at 3:51 a.m. when officers responded to shots being fired on the fourth floor of the east parking garage.

Arriving officers saw men on foot and in vehicles firing weapons while trying to flee.

One officer fired several times at a 22-year-old North Las Vegas man, who was transported to UMC with non-life threatening injuries. It was unclear whether the officer who fired caused the man's injuries.

The name of the officer who fired his weapon will be released 48 hours after the shooting, per department policy. The officer will be placed on routine paid-administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Police said a 24-year-old man also sustained non-life threatening injuries in the gunfight at the Rio.

Violence erupted two hours later outside the UMC's trauma center. Police arrived at 5:38 a.m. and discovered a 22-year-old Las Vegas man and a 19-year-old North Las Vegas man with gunshot wounds.

The men were assembled with a group outside the hospital in support of the two people who had been shot at the Rio, police said.

Police said multiple shots were fired outside UMC at the group from a small-caliber handgun by an unknown assailant. The conditions of the men who were shot outside UMC were unknown.

At 6:04 a.m., police learned of a third person who was shot at the Rio. A 24-year-old Las Vegas man showed up at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. His condition was unknown.
