Former Las Vegas officer guilty of lewdness on duty sued in federal court

A former Las Vegas police officer pleaded guilty to two gross misdemeanors related to groping women while on duty.

John Norman was sentenced to two consecutive one-year prison terms for oppression under the color of office and open or gross lewdness.

He resigned from the Metropolitan Police Department in 2012.

Now Norman is being sued in federal court.

Two women who stepped forward after Norman groped them in separate traffic stops between June and December in 2011 are the plaintiffs in the civil lawsuit.

The women allege civil rights violations and excessive force, including lewdness, assault, coercion and battery. The lawsuit accuses the police department of negligence and conspiracy.

Victoria Murnane and Melissa Davis suffered depression, embarrassment, anxiety, severe mental or physical pain and/or anguish of mind, according to the lawsuit that was filed Wednesday. They are seeking retribution for medical expenses and loss of wages and/or employment, plus attorney fees.

The women also are seeking compensatory damages and punitive damages in the amount of $1 million or more.
