Former prosecutor to be released from prison

The former veteran lawyer who once prosecuted the drug cases of celebrities Paris Hilton and Bruno Mars will be free from prison next month, his lawyer said.

Former Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney David Schubert, who fled to Mexico last year to avoid a nine-month jail sentence for cocaine possession, is expected to be paroled April 20, defense lawyer Louis Schneider said.

Schubert, 49, a 10-year prosecutor, was taken into custody at the Mexican border Sept. 30 while re-entering the United States after a national law enforcement alert was put out for his arrest.

After his return to Las Vegas, Schubert said felt he wasn’t being treated fairly by the legal system. District Judge Carolyn Ellsworth originally sentenced him to probation, but it included the nine-month jail stint.

Once back in custody, Ellsworth revoked his probation and sentenced Schubert to 12 to 30 months in prison.

In total, he will have served about 200 days behind bars when he is released from a state prison in Carson City next month.
