Man dies in U.S. Highway 95 crash

A man died Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 95 near Rancho Drive after the car he was driving flipped over, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The identity of the deceased man was not released.

Trooper Loy Hixson said at 1:40 p.m. a 2000 sport utility vehicle was merging from the north onramp at Rancho onto the highway when thread on a rear tire separated causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle rotated clockwise and struck a concrete barrier on the highway and then overturned and landed on its roof.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to University Medical Center. Her condition was not released. Hixson said she was conscious and talking to medical personnel prior to being taken to UMC.

The northbound highway was closed down to two lanes at Rancho, Hixson said. He expected all lanes to be open by about 5 p.m.
