Man wounded in North Las Vegas gang shooting dies

A man critically injured in a gang shooting in North Las Vegas on Wednesday died later that night.

Sidney Hampton, 22, died after being shot in the head, according to the county coroner's office.

North Las Vegas police said the shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 2400 block of Morton Avenue, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Carey Avenue.

Hampton and a 16-year-old boy were in a sport utility vehicle in the parking lot of the Buena Vista Springs Apartments when the shooter approached on foot and fired on them.

Hampton died at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday at University Medical Center. The teen was expected to recover, police said.

A police source said Wednesday's shooting may have been retaliation for a Tuesday gang shooting in which one man was critically injured. But Las Vegas police Lt. Bruce Miyama said it's only speculative that the incidents were connected. Las Vegas police handled the investigation into Tuesday's shooting.

In the Tuesday incident, a North Las Vegas man was critically injured after a shootout with another man in front of a house in the 900 block of Blankenship Avenue.

The wounded man later called 911 as he drove to his home in the 2100 block of Englestad Street, north of Lake Mead Boulevard. He was taken to University Medical Center.
