Nye County police chase ends in arrest

A Pahrump man wanted on a felony warrant led authorities on a two-state, high speed chase Friday that ended near the Amargosa Opera House, the Nye County Sheriff's Department reported.

The chase began around 7:40 a.m. on Highway 373 in Amargosa Valley when a Nye County Sheriff's deputy tried to stop Ricky Hampton, 53, of Pahrump.

Hampton, who was wanted on a felony warrant stemming from an investigation of a sexual assault of a child younger than 14, sped up to elude the deputy, according to a police report.

A chase resulted during which Hampton led police down several roads at high speeds and narrowly avoided collisions with other cars, the report stated.

It ended about 30 minutes and 40 miles later at near the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley Junction, Calif., where the sheriff's department reported Hampton stopped his car and took off on foot but was caught shortly thereafter.

He was arrested taken to Independence, Calif., to face charges stemming from the portion of the chase in California, Nye County officials reported. He will likely face charges in Nevada for resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to charges related to the warrant, the report stated.
