Six homes on Virgil Street catch fire

Six homes caught fire late Sunday afternoon in the northeast valley, the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

Spokesman Tim Szymanski said at 4:49 p.m. firefighters were called to the 1200 block of Virgil Street, near Washington Avenue and Pecos Road.

It was unknown how the fire began, but it spread quickly to several homes as trees and utility poles caught fire. Some homes on the neighboring road, Newport Street, also caught fire.

Damage was estimated at $500,000.

Szymanski said one house sustained extensive damage, another home was damaged heavily while the others had minor damage.

The fires were extinguished within 30 minutes, Szymanski said.

One cat died.

Some people reported breathing problems, but were not hospitalized .
