Slaying ends homicide-free streak for Las Vegas police

Authorities discovered a body Tuesday afternoon after Las Vegas police said a man walked into the downtown Clark County Detention Center and confessed to a killing.

Police spokesman Jose Hernandez said Tuesday night homicide detectives were investigating the case. He was unsure where the body was found and didn't have other details.

The man who confessed was detained.

Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber said the case is a homicide.

Before Tuesday, a slaying has not been reported within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police Department since April 28, a period of 23 days, said Steiber.

Such a streak is rare for Las Vegas police, although last year the department went 29 days without a reported slaying.

Last year's streak without a killing was the longest since a period of 40 days in 1990, from May 14 to June, 23.

From 2006 to 2011, Las Vegas police investigated a homicide every 2.8 days on average.
