CSN goes ‘Behind the Curtain’ for 2014-15 theater season

For its 2014-15 stage season, the College of Southern Nevada’s going back stage — to the intimate BackStage Theatre.

All four theatrical productions in the college’s “Behind the Curtain” season will be presented in the black box-style theater at CSN’s Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., North Las Vegas.

The comedies, classics and short plays on the schedule “show some aspect ‘behind the curtain’ of the theater,” according to new theater faculty member Aaron Tuttle. “The theme of these productions plays perfectly in the fittingly named BackStage Theatre.”

Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation” will kick off the season Oct. 10-19. This comedy/drama, which won the 2009 off-Broadway Obie Award for Best New American Play, traces the lives of a handful of small-town New Englanders who enroll in a six-week drama class at a local community center.

Anton Chekhov’s classic “The Sea Gull: follows Nov. 14-23. Written in 1895, this ensemble piece explores love, missed connections and what it means to be an artist in the theater. “Every theater student should know Chekhov and ‘The Sea Gull,’ ” says Tuttle.

Spring Shorts, a collection of short plays, will be performed Feb. 26-March 1.

CSN’s season closes April 10-19 with Tom Stoppard’s howlingly hilarious “The Real Inspector Hound,” an absurd play-within-a-play about two theater critics swept into an Agatha Christie-style murder-mystery.

Also on stage at CSN, the Utah Shakespeare Festival returns to CSN Feb. 6-7 with its touring production of “Macbeth,” which will be performed in the Nicholas J. Horn Theatre during the college’s annual SchoolFest.
