‘Mad Men’ star Hendricks talks equal pay in new online skit

LOS ANGELES — “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks won’t work like a modern woman if she’s still getting paid like a woman living in the 1960s.

The actress, who plays office manager Joan Harris on the critically-acclaimed AMC drama, gets educated on computers and smoking policies by new colleagues when she takes a job in Funny or Die’s “Modern Office.” The point of the sketch), however, isn’t Hendricks’ dated knowledge of the workplace around her - it’s how dated employers’ pay scales are.

“In the U.S., women make 23 percent less than their male counterparts,” Hendricks says while schooling a female co-worker. “Did you know that almost 70 percent of the minimum wage workforce is female, but only 15 percent of our Fortune 500 CEOs are?”

The video premiered a day before the Obama administration’s proposal for new regulations requiring federal contractors to disclose pay data by sex, race and other categories goes public on Friday for a 90-day comment period.
