Concert spotlights string quartet
January 28, 2010 - 10:00 pm
From Vegas With Love, a string quartet, will perform works by Prokofiev, Debussy and Harry Partch at 2 p.m. Saturday at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
General admission is $12, with a discounted price of $10 for seniors and children 12 and younger. For details, call 455-7340.
The local quartet includes Lenka Hajkova and Laraine Kaizer-Viazovtsev on violins, Tianna Heppner Harjo on viola and Zoe Ley on cello.
The program will feature "Eight Hitchhikers' Inscriptions from a Highway Railing in Barstow, Calif. (1941)." "Hitchhikers" was written by renegade American composer Partch and arranged by Ben Johnston. David Eckert will be the reader.
Kaizer-Viazovtsev said the Partch quartet is especially difficult because the composer did not use traditional notes and scales of Western music, instead creating his own scales.
