Hunt for pierogi succeeds

Homemade pierogi are a real treat -- and almost unknown in these parts. About 10 years ago, a local church sold pierogi made by its members, but apparently it has ended the practice. Happily, though, we do have a couple of local sources for Rosaleen Popovich.

Bob Embleton, Kathy Boland and Elaine Frazier recommended Levy's New York Deli, 7875 W. Sahara Ave., with Embleton suggesting a call ahead because they're made only once a week. Boland added that the deli owner also makes homemade stuffed peppers and cabbage rolls. And Klara Horvath recommended Jones Market, 3389 S. Jones Blvd. ...

For Diane Johnson, who's looking for burnt-peanuts candy, Janet McFarland suggested Walgreens and Aaron Mantz said they can be found in the candy aisle of most grocery stores, and that the similar Boston Baked Beans candy are found "virtually everywhere." ...

For Chris Cooke, who's looking for macadamia-nut ice cream, Mantz said it can be found at the ice cream stores at both the Gold Coast, 4000 W. Flamingo Road, and The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave. And Jan Schwartz recommended that served at Kate's Corner at South Point, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South, adding that it's great with hot fudge. ...

And for Bob Callet and other readers, Mantz said Nabisco Cheese Nips are back and available at most local Walmart stores -- although he noted that he's "not crazy about the new-and-improved flavor." ...

More on Marzetti's slaw dressing: Donna Johns e-mailed that while she has found it at Smith's, she thinks the store's Kroger brand is identical -- and less expensive. ...

More on Filipino restaurants: Grace Schmiedel recommended Elena's at 2534 E. Desert Inn Road. ...

More reader requests: Schmiedel: a local source for a chili ristra;

Sara Fraga: pickling cucumbers -- not jumbo-sized;

Carmelita Chapman: Bavarian bread;

Estelle and Joseph Harf: hull-less popcorn for popping;

Gerry Petuya: a local source for wheat bran coarse flakes, in bulk or 12-ounce packages;

Chris Miller: deep-fried burritos that are sometimes sold at mom-and-pop gasoline stations;

Richard Hopper: frozen Uno pizza, which he used to get at Albertsons;

Evelyn Mayfield: large jars of Gold's Duck Sauce, which she used to get at Smith's;

Donna Tinley: Kraft Tangy Italian Spaghetti, which she used to get at Walmart, and Gaucho Italian beef;

And Terry Taylor: red-cabbage soup, similar to that she used to get at the Celebrity Deli.
